White Smoke

I feel it going like fire through the trees,
and what's left burning is nothing like what once was me.
Watch it burn away,
watch it burn unchecked through the hills,
and stop it never will.

I've seen the faces of those I love turn black.
The smoke keeps rising, it's just never coming back.
The flames are rising,
and water and time will never douse their pain.
It seers its name
On flesh and memory, on lust and on shame.
Can I so easily assign the blame
when the white smoke of pain is in my eyes?

Some fires are accidental, some are arson set.
The trick is to decide which you are going to try and forget.
And it is not so simple.
Burns hurt only when they heal,
cause that's when you feel
flesh and memory, lust and burning shame.
Flames never burn quite the same

When the white smoke of pain is in my eyes.
The fire fades and slowly dies.
And I can't find my position.
I've forgotten my religion.
And the air's so thick that I am almost blind,
from the white smoke of pain that's in my eyes.

Forests, people, they have all burned down.
Nothing grows till fire's scorched the ground

When the white smoke of pain is in my eyes.
The fire fades and slowly dies.
And I can't find my position.
I've forgotten my religion.
And the air's so thick that I am almost blind,
from the white smoke of love,
from the white smoke of life,
from the white smoke of pain that's in my eyes.
