Wendie Colter at Luna Park

West Hollywood - November 9, 1999

This show was kinda cool and kinda a disappointment. There were a whole bunch of bands on the lineup, and I caught two of them (Marvin Etzioni and someone whose name I don't remember). Etzioni seemed to be shooting for an Elvis Costello thing, but he seemed more like Kramer (from Seinfeld) with a mandolin. The other guy seemed to be aiming for a Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers sound. They were both good, but I really came to see Wendie.

So all these other bands are taking encores, and thus eating into the time of later artists (i.e. Wendie). So finally at like 12:30, they put Wendie on stage. She was already planning on playing with Steve Barton, which I knew about, but they also threw Josh Clayton on the stage at the same time and gave them 1/2 hour for all three of them. The each got 2 songs. Wendie played Pushing The Rock Up The Hill and String of Pearls and she sounded great.

This sort of bogus promotion is an insult to both the artist and the audience. If you're gonna give away encores like cereal box prizes, you shouldn't book seven or eight bands. Lately several of the bands I like have gotten screwed by promoters. Promoters are only one notch below lawyers on my the list of scummiest people on Earth. If I remember right, they were one of the seven plagues of Moses times. You remember - frogs, locusts, concert promoters...
