Posed Pix at The Gig

Hollywood - October 22, 1999

[John's Local Band Pix]
[Wayne Resnick] [Walter Clevenger & The Dairy Kings] [The Masticators]
[Bat Country] [The Piper Downs] [The Andersons]

So, like you know when you go to a concert and there's two great bands in a row. It's like a one-two punch of rock & roll and you don't just feel like you got your money's worth for the cover, but you feel like you got a bargain. The show at the Gig Hollywood was like that, only it was like a one-two-three-four-five-six-seven punch until the whole crowd got the rope-a-dope of rock & roll. And not only do these bands play some excellent music, but they're genuinely nice and they'll talk to you like you're a real person instead of a bunch of vermin fanboys and girls. :-)

The show was a hybrid of the 00 Spies record release show and the previous monster lineup at The Gig put together by Bobby Bognar. I left from work as soon as I could, but the show started early so I missed McMath & Klimak and most of Wayne Resnick. I'm bummed I missed `em, but it was still a hell of a bargain. The only problem with this many cool bands back-to-back is that I run out of shots. I had to delete a few clearly-out-of-focus pics between sets, and I eventually dropped to lower resolution for the Andersons. Maybe next monster-lineup I'll drop to 1024x768 for all the bands and just shoot away.

On my comments for the boat show, I mentioned that I thought the Andersons played the hottest set of the night, and it was like Kallisti all over again. I caught some flack from a couple of members of the other bands. Look you guys, it's not like I said everyone else at the show sucked, I just liked that band the best that night. This ain't the Grammy's here, it's just one poor sap with a digicam and a web page.

I could puss out and say all the bands were equally good this show, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Walter Clevenger's set was the most fun of the night, barely edging out The Piper Downs. Everybody else sucked. Yeah, that's it. I won't be coming to see any of the rest of these bands or buying their CDs (at least until they play again in public or release more CDs). Hey. Even a sap's gotta have standards.

As usual, I let my friend Steve take some posed shots, but they're a mixed bag. The dark lighting and smoky atmosphere in the club gave the camera focus problems with some of the inside shots, though the outside ones came out pretty cool. Somehow Steve Adam managed to sneak into the shot of Norm. It's not obvious, but Wendy is showing off her karate moves (ooooh, scary :-).
