Last year many of the Negro Problem shows I saw were focused mostly
on the new material (from Joys and Concerns), and they often played
a fixed set that went mostly unchanged for several shows in a row.
Lately, they've been incorporating some of their older and newer
songs back into their shows, and this show was no exception. They
played Lady of the Manor (see lyrics below), The Rehab Song,
and Bijou, as well as another new song which Stew did a second
time with a less subtle set of lyrics. They also played Submarine
Down, Doubting Uncle Tom, and Club Girl Terrain from
Post Menstrual Syndrome. In fact, the set list had like 25
songs on it, which they were picking from in a fairly loose manor
(Stew also did a small section of Sebastian Cabot at Dean's
request).
They still had Andy on drums, and Morely Bartnoff sat in on Keyboards. Half the time, Stew just told him the key (not the chords, just the key) and let him figure out the song as they went along. Morely's a quick study, so he did a great job. Lisa Jenio was there too, but she didn't bring her flute, so she sat in on backing vox on Lady of the Manor and then enjoyed the show with us groundlings. I didn't take many group pictures, as I was basically pinned to the stage the whole show, so most of the pictures are on the separate page of one or two band members. The one animation I shot of Stew came out way over-saturated, but just imagine that he's Michael Jackson and then it'll make more sense. (in fact, he looks as faded as his image on my Negro Problem T-Shirt :-). Enjoy the pix - |
