For a long time, the Sugarplastic has been my favorite "LA band that I'd never seen in concert." I remedied that last night by catching their set at Spaceland. If you haven't seen them before, they put on a really great concert with two amps, a guitar, a bass, a set of drums, and a microphone (ok, I'm skipping the pa, but who's counting). This the poster band for the concept of "pedals, we don't need no stinking pedals." Instead, they rely on technical skill and excellent songwriting to make the music interesting. My favorite album (Bang! The Earth is Round) and favorite song (Sweet Polly Brown) at the time of this writing are both by the band. So they played a great set and were getting ready to pack up. The audience were hollerin' for an encore, and Stew (who spent much of the show standing right up in front, bopping along to thier music) went up and told them to go for it, and they let fly with Sweet Polly Brown. It's not often the lead singer for your favorite band asks another band to play your favorite song on stage. In the words of Eric Cartman, sweeeet. Enjoy the pictures - |
