Piper Downs & The Wheat From Chaff All-Stars at Pinot

Hollywood - Nov 14, 1999

[Wheat from Chaff Festival]

Right at the start of the Piper Downs set, Bobby Bognar got a phone call from Chris Novicki (the PDs drummer). He thought the set was later, so he wouldn't be there. Jason Rarick filled in for a short Piper Downs set. The only tune he didn't know was Delicate, but he did an admirable job on all the songs they played (an exceptional job considering he never practiced with them).

Next up, Danny Blitz joined the Piper Downs for Bottle Rocket. Garner moved over from lead guitar to drums, thus completing a hat trick for the day (remember, he also played bass with Michael Denvir). I heard Garner was going to be playing a bazouki and pan-flute duet with himself after the all-stars, but I just couldn't stay for it. :-)

After that, Derrick Anderson and Severo came up and joined the PDs for a cover of Behind the Wall of Sleep, since Severo was a member of the Smithereens for a while. There was a brief moment of confusion because Derrick didn't know he would be called upon to sing it, and he didn't know all the lyrics. After a brief ribbing over this, they went on and played the song.

Lisa Mychols was the next to take the stage, for a nice cover of The Waiting by Tom Petty.

Norm Kelsey jammed with the PDs on Nowhere Man, and if his microphone had anything to say about it, that was Bobby.

To close out the show, Bobby called up everyone and their brother to play and or sing along on Neil Young's Keep On Rocking in the Free World. By this time, I was down to 3 pictures left, and I blew one of `em (it's out of focus), but for an unlit night time gig, ya gotta expect that. Thanks Bobby and Wayne for putting on a great festival.
