I've been wanting to see Ozomatli ever since I first heard their CD about
a year ago. They've played a few gigs in LA since then, but I always
had a conflict with some other show or something. I finally got a
chance to see them at the El Rey gig. Did they live up to my very
high expectations for them? OH HELL YEAH!
I was tipped off by a friend that they'd be wandering through the audience to get to the stage, but the El Rey was crowded, so they couldn't do much wandering, just walk down the very narrow aisle up to the stage. It was so packed that I couldn't get near enough to the aisle to get a picture of them. In fact, The only person I really had a clear shot of at the start of the show was Cut Chemist. After a song or two (Como Ves and something else, maybe Oh Le Le), I went looking for a better view. First I headed to the balcony, then eventually over to the other side, where the security guy was more sympathetic to my cause of shooting pictures and let me hang out in the aisle a bit more, and even let me backstage for a minute to get a picture of the drummer & percussionists. Ozomatli played a long set including a guest appearance by Chali2Na and they also had a bunch of their kids join them on stage to play percussion on a song. With 9 or 10 band members and elements of salsa, jazz, rap, rock, funk, and house, this band is extremely diverse and talented. And they're damn fun too. Enjoy the pictures - |
