Girls Guitar Club are a riot. This is actually the second time I've
seen them, the first time being opening for the Eels at the Roxy.
Basically it's a standup act by Mary Lynn Rajkskub (sp?) and Karen
Kilgarif (sp?) that parodies the sensitive-chick-Lilith-fair type of
act (i.e. they're particularly down on Jewel). Their songs are
rambling kinda story-songs (think Mojo Nixon or the Smothers Brothers)
where the two of them are usually each singing on their own
stream-of-thought sounding lyrics until they find a common theme on
which they'll harmonize for a line or two.
When I saw them at the Roxy, they had the audience in stitches, but I don't think the less hip crowd at the Voodoo Lounge quite got it. They laughed at some of the obvious jokes, like calling the G chord the "European Fuck You", but they didn't seem very rapt by the songs (maybe they didn't realize it was a joke). Part of the blame falls on the Voodoo Lounge's sound system. When GGC played the Roxy, I could clearly understand everything they were saying, but at the Doo-doo lounge, a lot of their funnier stuff got lost, especially during the song about the Virgin Mall on Sunset. Well guitar fans, you'll get another chance to see them (and actually hear them) this Thursday (the 19th), where they're opening for the Tubes at the Roxy. I suggested they do "She's a Beauty" as their challenge song for the show, but they'll probably stick to their traditional Hold the Line. Enjoy the pix - |
