Following one of these performances he was approached by Miss Lulu of Hollywood (a.k.a. Lulu Einstein of Hollywood, FL), who was convinced that Fleischmann needed help--but fast! Miss Lulu agreed to assist him in starting a band with the stipulation that he enter psychotherapy. A student of voice, kazoo and Hawaiian nose plucking at Julliard, Miss Lulu's talents were a perfect complement to Fleischmann's vague accompaniment. They soon added guitarist Jacques Flambeau, a victim of bait-and-switch advertising who believed he would be auditioning for a Captain Beefheart tribute band. Within weeks the soggy and somewhat shriveled Svensen joined the lineup, employing his extremely rare contrabass ukulele.

Other musicians auditioned as well but declined band membership. Was it Flambeau's unsolicited renderings of Lick My Decals Off, Baby, Svensen's ever-present innertube, Miss Lulu's inability to control her feet, or simply the distastefulness of being associated with someone named "Fingy"? The world may never know. Or care

Since their successful debut in October 1999, The California Navels have been seeking other venues and adding to their repertoire in preparation for an invasion of the L.A. cabaret circuit.
