Cockeyed Ghost at Jack's Sugar Shack

Hollywood - September 17, 1999

[John's Local Band Pix] [Cockeyed Ghost's Home Page]

Billed as "Robert Ramos and Cockeyed Ghost" for the evening, the headliners put on a good show. One particular highlight was when Robbie Rist came up and took over on bass to do Are You Married Yet? from their first album.

One thing though, after this set, my ears were really ringing (they're still ringing as I'm writing this, the next morning). They started out at good levels and a good mix and some friend of theirs from the audience told them that they should turn all the guitars up, which was just totally wrong. Then they got out of balance, with Robert's bass louder than the two guitars, so Adam had them turn the two guitars up (you know, it is possible to fix a mix by turning something down as well). The same kinda thing happened at the Spaceland set. They were ear-bleeding loud compared to the other bands. I enjoyed this show, but I'm going to have to remember to bring earplugs to Cockeyed Ghost sets, or just not go.

Some people ask me why I take so many pictures during gigs. "Take 4 or 5 quality shots, and let it go at that," my critics say. The problem is, I'm not a professional photographer. In fact, quite the opposite is the case, I suck eggs as a photographer. Thus if I took 4 or 5 pictures, then the odds of me getting at least one good shot would be lower than my odds of winning the lotto.

Check out this example. When I shot it I thought, oh that's cool, I got 3 of them in one shot. But as you can see, all 3 of their faces are constructed. Usually I leave photos like this (or out of focus pix) out of the pages, but I'm throwing this one in because it shows just how bad some of my pictures truly are. It's got all 3 of them in frame, it's clearly in focus (i.e. the camera worked great), but all three of their faces are obstructed. I've elected this my worst band photo of 1999 (but I've still got 3 months to do worse!!! -).
