Buck at Static Siege

Down in the auditorium of the LA Variety Arts Center, they had a stellar lineup of bands. I had other plans for the night time, but I came down early to catch Buck, and it was very cool to see them rockin' out up there on a big spacious stage. The place was huge compared to any place I've seen Buck play before, but they're tight, fast musicality worked well with the room's acoustics. I thought they played a long set, but Pepper said it was just regular lenghth, so maybe it was my being out of perspective from having attended the all the short sets of Poptopia the week before.

Buck had Brandon Jay (of Lutefisk and Miss Spiritual Tramp of 1948 and other bands) sitting in on drums, as Corky had some wedding plans to make. He hit the skins hard, and filled in nicely.

If some of the pictures look different, it's because I have a new external flash for the camera. This was only my second show using it, and a weird situation at that. In nightclubs, I should be able to use it as a bounce flash, but this was a regular theater with 50 foot ceilings, so that was out. As it happened, they wouldn't let the crowd closer than about 5 feet from the stage, so I needed all the direct flash I could use. I took some with and some without and got some interesting results. They also had great lighting, so that helped a lot.
