Becky Stark at The Echo

Echo Park - February 16, 2003

[John's Local Band Pix]

If I had to describe Becky Stark's music, I'd say it's timeless and American. By timeless, I mean there is nothing to tie it down to a particular time frame and make it seem anachronistic. By American, I mean in a sense like Woodie Guthrie or Stephen Foster. If you close your eyes at a Becky Stark gig, you could imagine yourself at a folk sit-in in the sixties, a saloon in Wyoming in the 19th century, or even an eighteenth century Philadelphia inn. There's nothing in the music or lyrics to reveal that the music is from 21st century Los Angeles. It's heartfelt, simple and beautiful.

I didn't do a great job on pictures, but I'm much more of a distraction when there's a lone guitar player gently strumming and singing than when the wild antics of the Bamboozled are flying around the stage. I wanted to capture the interesting way the light was only lighting one side of her face, but everytime my shutter snapped it seemed really loud to me, so I decided to stick with only a few photos, most of which came out blurred. Oh well, enjoy the shots I got...
