Thursday should have been labeled "acoustic set night".
First the Piper Downs, then the Andersons. The difference
here is that the Andersons truly played an unplugged
set, or about as unplugged as you'll see a nightclub set.
Bill & Bob were playing acoustic guitars, unamplified. Only
Derrick's bass was amplified, and that only because you
wouldn't have been able to hear it otherwise. They all had
mikes, but weren't particularly leaning into them, and
considering the size of the room and the balance of the
instruments, they didn't need to.
What a set. From the opening chords of My Life Still Sucks to the end of their cover (which I didn't know), I was blown away. Some rock music doesn't translate down to acoustic fare well, but this set was excellent. I think it's an indicator of how good the songwriting is that you can strip away all the effects and drums and they still hold up really well. After the set, Lisa Mychols had copies of the new Masticators CDs for sale. I could go on about another page of raves about it here, but I'll save that for the CD relase party page. Enjoy the pix - |
