Third Thursday at Highland Grounds

Hollywood - April 20, 2000

[John's Local Band Pix] [Highland Grounds' Home Page]

The name of the last band to play pretty much summed up the theme for this month's Third Thursday: Viva Las Chicas! Wendie booked an excellent lineup of women, leaning toward folk, but with some pop, rock, and blues thrown in for good measure. I got there late (always a mistake at a 3T show), and missed Astropuppies, who I heard were very good. Comments for the other artists are with the pictures for each artist.

Major props need to be given to one artist, Linda Good of the Twigs, who played keyboards &/or guitar and sang with 3 of the 5 artists I saw. I guess French people would just call her bellybone.

Enjoy the pix -

Wendie Colter

I got there right at the start of Wendie Colter's set, and there wasn't an empty seat in the house. Not that I sit down much when I'm watching (and shooting) a band, but sometimes the early bands only half fill the house (or was that just my band? :-). It was SRO for Wendie, and not much of that. Tom played with her for most of the set, and Linda Good joined her for one song which she had never played live before, which sounded great. I think my favorite one she played was Professor. I'm not sure if that's on one of her earlier CDs, but if not I guess I'm jonesing for a new Wendie Colter CD.

Evie Sands

I was out on the patio chatting with people when Evie Sands' set started. I heard this twangy delta blues riff calling me into the club like a siren song. Her lead guitarist (anyone remember his name?) was playing an old style blues riff (think Robert Johnson) and Evie was up there singin' the blues. Most of her songs were blues or roots rock tunes, calling to mind Bonnie Raitt or Lucinda Williams (who I believe she said played on her CD). Darian Sajanaja and Lisa Jenio joined Evie for a song, but I think my favorite song by her was her last number, which she did by herself.

Kim Fox

Kim opened with Lazy Afternoon, which always reminds me of the Reivers album End of the Day. She played a moody set, including Dwarf Star (which I like a lot) and a couple of songs off of Moon Hut (but I've still never seen her play Sweetest Revenge, which is my favorite by her). Her "God, I wish I wrote that" song was the music where the plastic bag dances in the movie American Beauty. Linda Good joined her for several songs and Cindy Lee Berryhill jumped in for some background vocals as well.

Kim said that she was feeling Jewish guilt for playing on Passover, so she passed out matzoh & macaroons to the audience to atone for her transgression. You can even see a piece of matzoh on the keyboard in one of my shots. :-)

Cindy Lee Berryhill

Last time I saw Cindy Lee Berryhill at Third Thursday, she let two girls (the Troy sisters) do most of the singing. I think she was producing them or something. Anyway, this time around it was all Cindy Lee and it was great. For her GIWIWT song, she did a song "by someone who lived in LA... but also used to be in the Beatles." :-) It was an interesting arrangement of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
