The email message said 3GT played at 6:00. Laura had told me it was really going to be 6:15, and that they were only allowed a 20 minute set. So I figured if I left Burbank at 4:30, I should be able to get there on time. Big mistake. The freeways were a parking lot. When 4:15 rolled along, I was on the 405 in Costa Mesa. I was thinking, "If they start on time, I miss the whole thing. If they start late, maybe I'll catch part of their set."

I rolled into the Verizon parking lot (where traffic was moving faster than the freeway) about 6:35. I got out of my car & could hear Dusty O'Merriweather wafting over the hills of Irvine. I started to run. I quickly picked up my photo pass at the will call line & went through the security search. As I headed up the road, I could hear the first strains of What's Going On. I started to run again (about half a mile uphill). I made it there in the middle of the drum solo.

The advantage of a big venue was immediately clear, as they sounded great. This was no Que Sera, where the sound person doesn't have a clue how to get a mic to work without feedback, everything was there, and everything was balanced. Sabrina sounded great and had a huge stage to prowl. The stage was pretty high, so she couldn't really go into the audience as she's been inclined to recently, but she stalked the audience on all sides.

I went around back & shot a few pix from the back of the stage to encompass the crowd, but I was rushing things a bit, as I didn't know how much longer they had to play. I got back out in front just as they started Tongues (no intro song due to time constraints) & squeezed off a few more pix.

Crowd response was excellent. They gave away all the giveout CDs and most of the stickers they brought, & the band were swamped with new fans & autograph seekers after the show. Thanks again to Weezer, a big name band who remembers that they were once a small band trying to make a name for themselves & tries to help out newer bands in that situation.

Enjoy the pix -
